Ex-doorman acquitted of sex assault in Northampton

A former doorman of a youth club has been acquitted of sexual offences upon a six-year-old girl in Northampton more than 20 years ago.
Martin Grey, 50, was arrested on suspicion of committing indecent assaults upon his release from prison after serving an 18-month sentence for offences against an under-age girl.

The allegations came to light when the complainant's sister spotted his name in the Chronicle & Echo when he was facing trial on similar charges last year.

He appeared at Northampton Crown Court for trial, accused of indecently assaulting a girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, between 1988 and 1992.

Grey, formerly of Crow Lane, Great Billing, Northampton, denied touching the girl intimately and was acquitted following a two-day trial.

Steven Evans, defending, pointed to inconsistencies between the complainant's statement to police and the evidence she had given in court to the jury.

He said: "I am going to suggest you have made this act up. You cannot remember the detail, so I contest that you are not telling the truth."

Grey was convicted in 2008 of offences against an underage girl who he had met while working as a doorman for a Jesus Army youth club.
