Understand you completely. I just don't think I would use the word thick because it implies lack of intelligence. I don't think that is the case....not at the centre of power, anyway.

One thing I have noticed in recent years, though, (and this is maybe what you are alluding to?) has been a dumbing down of membership. Back in the day, they concentrated on recruiting intelligent, well educated people, professional types who had lots of earning power and leadership skills.

When I visited and stayed a weekend about three years ago I noticed that they celebrated the fact that they no longer pander to the middle class. They made a big deal of how this was now a church for street people etc, which is a laudable image....and very much the image they want to sell of themselves. But its downside is that their households have money problems, they will chase leavers for debts, their members are less discriminating (unable to discern deceit etc) and they are rubbish at arguing well or being discreet....

....which is why it is safer, from Jophn Campbell's point of view, if there is a blanket ban on any of them posting....because they just can't stop themselves from blurting out juicy nuggets...

....but there is one advantage for the JA in recruiting among life's losers, which is that when they leave they don't have a very credible voice in opposition.
