Subject: funny how people who look to 1 person for what they should believe think that critics must follow me
In reply to: Sarah Hughes 's message, "Re: When was the last time a JA came on here to be anything other than rude?" on 5/12/09 10:40:29pm

It is in the nature of the JA to like simplistic, easily pigeonholed concepts, so naturally you will find the convolutions of criticism of the JA complex. You are over-looking the fact that people out here in the world do not all think the same....so here you have a montage of different views about the fellowship.

One thing I would say is that I have never said that people in the JA are brainwashed. I actually don't think there is any such thing. In my view the concept is a way for weak willed people to abdicate responsibility for having made a decision which they later feel embarrassed about. I was responsible for joining the fellowship - and for deciding to leave it. I do think people are indoctrinated, but that is different. I also think that people are put under pressure and that, more significantly, they contort their own thinking in order to accommodate the will of the brethren. But it is still all about individual responsiblity.

I don't think you are brainwashed, Sarah, but your assertions that you were not someone who could be bullied, and that you were utterly determined in your course, when we talked about starting the "dialogue" forum, were belied by your subsequent statements about your neglect of your duties as a mother in community the week following the Dialogue's launch.....so that all of a sudden you wouldn't be able to be involved.

It was a very public about-turn....and a perfect illustration of the influence that the brethren have over you. The fact that you also went from sending really sweet emails and texts (in which we shared a common hope and vision)....to now seemingly coming on here only to be unpleasant about me and my "followers" etc indicates a need in you to demonstrate to the church that you are still loyal and veryt definitely not under my control. In fact, where's that very interesting posting where you actually talk about how you decided to not be involved in the dialogue because the brethren had told you that you must not be controlled by me?

I firmly believe that it won't be long before the same people who persuaded all JAs not to get involved in the Dialogue, in the hope that it would die a death, will recognise the damage you are doing to the church's rep by coming on sounding very unchristian, will silence you. You will leave with a parting shot across the bows about how you have something much more important to do.....(and people will wonder how you had so much time to waste here in the first place, which John will rightly explain away as the time that less committed style 1s always have)

As long as you are here telling us how very hillarious we all are (while assiduously avoiding being drawn into the sort of intelligent discussion you wouldn't be able to handle and John Campbell wouldn't be able to censor) you show the JA as it is, and that in itself can't be bad.

But the point John is making is that your role could only be performed here by someone who isn't in community...who isn't really in central zion, not fully committed. The thing is that only fringe members have ever really been free to defend the JA online, because John C has always had the sense to know that the best way to stop a story is not to respond to it.

So don't stop coming to laugh at us. The joke is on the JA in the long run ;)
