Sorry.. I was talking about the law on corporal punishment in schools since Tom makes the connection between church practice and caning in schools. I was just trying to make the point that the use of a wooden spoon for disciplining children was very common in community way after corporal punishment had been banned in schools... so it's not just a case of the church following the social practices of the day as Tom seems to be implying.
