When God wanted to have the people of Israel go into the promised land (coming out of Egypt), He didn't want to kill these people that used to live in that land. They had the choise to be driven away. If they rebelled, they were to be killed. But: these people were very animal like: history describes that things like children sacrifice and all kinds of dirty sexual things were "normal" in that time. God wanted to have a holy people. If the people of Israel also went to behave like animals for many, many years, they were also driven away by God to a far away country (Assur). That was their own fault, the result of rebellion against God. When you have hurts from the past, you can easily come to wrong conclusions. Even when I had left the Jesus Army for quite a few years I had a "habit" coming from the Jesus Army that I still felt as "right", and only this year I felt how wrong I was in that. I feel too embarrassed even to tell you what it was, but it tells me how far reaching the wrong kind of influence can be.
