Subject: misery

My prevailing memory of living in community is misery and disapproval. I find that very sad and painful to admit.

I remember that very little that I did within the household seemed to meet with approval from my household leader. Criticism, however, was never in short supply and I remember how that ran me down into a deeper and deeper misery as the days went by.

I remember when sharing with another leader about how I felt, I was told that I had a bad heart and was a "man pleaser" and was reminded of the song.......

"let me love without honour, let me serve without applause. Let me suffer, no-one knowing, live for Jesus with out Praise"

this excuse hurt me at the time, but now when I think about that conversation, I'm not shocked at all.

My experience of community living is that the norm is to run folk down and criticise whenever possible, household leaders lead by example in this (using Jesus as an excuse).

Clearly this is not the given outward impression, when in meetings and evangelism there is a rose tinted presentation of a blissfully encouraging community life!

I've witnessed this in 4 different community houses that I've lived in and talked to dozens of folk who've been stuck in the same situation.
