I am not unsympathetic to the fellowship's position. It used to get ripped off by loads of free-loaders in my time and it really pissed me off how easily we were taken for a ride by people who were just using us.

But I am not really talking about this chap in particular, but more the change in emphasis from being a place where everyone contributed what they could to people paying rent.

.....and needy people ending up in debt to the JA

I know someone who left the fellowship and the next day got a bill for about £800 (stuffed though my letterbox) with a demand to pay without delay, even though they knew that he had left with nothing and had been handing over most of what he took home as it was.

Back in the day it was accepted that if you evangelised street people they wouldn't be able to pay as much as others. People used to volunteer to work on the farms.

There seems to be a far greater stress put on money these days.

Seems to me that you don't want to be poor around the JA these days. Which is ironic when you think that it majors on recruiting from among them.
