Hi! Arthur C Clarke, that's it! I read that when I was very young, and I remember it being so exciting! I had joined the science fiction book club (this must have been the late 50's or early sixties) and that's (sf) just about all i read for years. I also remember a story by A E van Vogt (?), SLAN, and Voyage of the Space Beagle.

I hope things sort themselves out ok for your dad. That's a tough situation.
