your post asked primarily about desire as it relates to sex and i think some of the replies missed this point.

Desire is only negative when it becomes compulsive. If the nature of the desire is unconscious and misunderstood then there is an automatic outpulling of energy to the senses - a movement from subtle to gross. This instantaneously gives rise to asmita or egoism. In this instance the physical, vital and mental force have been brought to our lower nature and dispersed.

If however, the desire is non compulsive, it is understood, and acted upon consciously as an act of will i.e. an expression of the moment to moment joy of spirit, then it is completely possible not to completely lower energy and to remain centred in spirit, at kutastha. Clearly, there may still be some dissipation of physical energy through the act and possibly vital but the inner state remains the same.

The test for all desires must be whether they are karma producing and if something is done compulsively it will be based on samskara and therefore karma generating.

If the nature of the sexual desire is understood, and by an act of will the choice to participate further is made then there is a spontaneous and effortless inward direction of energy and not some unconcsious circuitous energy route based on the accumulation of past attachments.

It has also been my experience that through deeper Kriya practice, sex becomes a willed act. It becomes almost as Yogananda referred to as 'the dream breath' in Kriya. Sex can become almost like a 'dream act' i.e an expression of consciousness, love and bliss and not simply the movement of nervous energy.

Yogananda said we should all become spiritual scientists and therefore we cannot apply hard and fast rules for all. It is choice and consequence. A low level Sadhak may sustain 2 - 3 times per week but there will be some consequence and loss of energy. The deeper you want to go in Sadhana then inevitably even though you may understand the nature of your desire, you may still not want to sacrifice any loss of precious prana.
