Has anyone got info. or understanding regarding what I believe could be referred to as sananda savikalpa samadhi and sasmita savikalpa samadhi within the yoga sutras? I think they relate to the stages withing kutasta which B. Sanyal referred to as the nada point and the thoughtless point within kutasta.

M, you hinted there is a natural contraction that many people's minds do not like when they leave the bliss of the nada (sananda?) and enter into the last vestige of separation, the primal I--(sasmita?). Can you say more or point to a quote by a kriya acharya on this?

Further, what of the state of the gunas and the 4 fold mind in sasmita? I think in the sananda state the gunas are moving, which makes the nada. Sattwa is dominant. In sasmita the gunas are frozen, which gives no vibration, but sattva (or buddhi?) is focused on itself. There seems only one wave in the chittwa,---I am. This I thought can be resolved by asking "who am I" as Ramana advised or by making the mind vacant via neti-neti. Regardless, viveka has to be exersized. The nirvikalpa comes by grace of God/guru. (Incidentally, Ramana admitted his vichara and vedanta technique was for 'ripe' souls. Seems to me this is the stage it becomes truly central, and few have sasmita level samadhi.)

How Patanjali's 4 savikalpas and 1 nirvikalpa match Yogananda's superconsciousness, Christ Consciousness and Cosmic consciousness is another issue I am pondering. So far I think Yogananda's superconscious is the sananda savikalpa which correlates to the nada stage within the star in kutasta. Christ consciousness is the sasmita state. (Seems it would be beyond light as there is no movement of the gunas) Yogananda's Cosmic consciousness is the 1st nirvikalpa stage, but actually there are two that many agree on. Nirbikalpa is unbroken nirvikalpa, even in action of the body. This is the second nirvikalpa stage I have seen described by Ramana and Sivananda. It is oft called sahaja samadhi.

Yogananda told Roy Davis many saints roam in the bliss of God (sananda savikalpa?) for millions of years before going beyond to full liberation.
Regardless, the 1st step to these states is to penetrate the star in kutasta. I have been told the gold ring and the blue middle in kutatsata should be bypassed. Lahiri desribed many things he saw in kutasta. Yogananda asserts all will see the kutasta as SRF decribes it and have to enter in the star to get to cosmic consciousness. Is this an idea upheld by other kriya lines or no? The thing most don't realize is it will likely take many years to get to Nirvikalpa after they penetrate the star. I am not making this my belief system, I am ready for illumination to come to me as I walk down the street.

Yogananda is clear that it is unbroken nirvikalpa or sahaja that is the ultimate goal.(He actually says nirbikalpa--the b is a bengali v as I understand it. Why SRF still uses the b in this word, at least in everything but the gita, I am not sure of. It is confusing with the b.)

The nirvikalpa state is beyond description. But time and space vanish, desires vanish and one is in natural bliss. One is always "here now" as Ram Dass says. When Jesus gives his sermon on the mount, it is a incredibly high teaching on how to act to get this state. Only recently have I grown to appreciate how lofty that sermon is. It seems directed to serious chelas of a renunciate bent. Why should we be poor, meek, pure of heart, etc? He adds in the Lord's prayer as a consolation of sorts to the dualistic worshippers. To be honest it seems out of place.

best wishes

Sundarar
