Subject: avatars and their purpose

This blends in well with Jesus and the easter season. If he was an avatar, why would he say, "father, why hast thou forsaken me?" This bothered me for a long while. Same with Yogananda, if he is an avatar, why would he enter a deeper state of nirvikalpa in 1948?

Well, as I understand it, the avatars are always in a sort of nirbikalpa, even in the womb and at birth. But they also take on karma that they have to work out, though it is other people's. Furthermore, though they appear to make mistakes, it is only for the drama and is role appropriate, as I understand it. They have an in-expressable double consciousness. Now this is Yogananda's testimony, as expressed nicely by Mirilini Mata. I tend to beleive them, but in essense, I don't really care so much these days. The important thing is Jesus and Yogananda set a pattern for us til their last breath, and we have to re-enact it in ourselves. Both of them finished life marvelously and resurrected their bodies to show proof they 'graduated' so to speak. That's enough for me to try and emmulate them.

I have been reading Amrita's 2nd Coming of Christ books of late. Master says there that Jesus had Christ consciousness at baptism, but went to the desert to be tested of the devil, as we all will be tested when we are in Christ consciousness, evidently. He was tempted to use his siddhis, but he did not. By passing this test Master says Jesus went to the 1st stage of Brahman or impersonal Spirit communion. I assume this equates with initial nirbikalpa samadhi and jivanmukta.
Further, Master says he had a little delusion on the cross, and this is a symptom of jivanmukta, the nirbikalpa samdhi isn't deep or totally continuous, you may say. Yogananda says in his Gita that a jivanmukta still faces little conflicts due to the gunas and has to refer to his kutasta (spiritual eye) and discrimination in a pinch, and can make mistakes. Now maybe PART of Yogananda was at this level until 1948 also.

Incidentally, Jesus on the cross could be seen on a physical, mental and spiritual level. The physical shows it takes suffering to get to God, and there is likely sacrifices to be made--most people will misunderstand, and you have to practice forgiveness. Mentally or pranically, one could look to the cross as sushumna between ida and pingala in the light of kriya. Spiritually, Jesus is the ego that must be surrendered in samadhi. I find it wonderful that no matter what level you are at spiritually, you can learn from these people. Everything Jesus did seemed to be "multi-tasking"...Fulfill the prophecies, reform the Jewish religion, teach the people, purufy the advanced chelas....The Last Supper shows this marvelously.

At the time of the death on the cross there is the thunder of Om, the rain, and he crumples into Mary's lap. That is he merges in OM. Rumour has it he performed the higher kriyas with the head twist earlier. Perfect symbol for a advanced kriyaban.

Further, Yogananda says Jesus is cleansed of physical karma (actually of other people)on the cross, and the 2 days that follow he will cleanse astral and causal karma. Only then can Jesus resurrect himself in yogic terms. When he does so he demonstrates (partial) siddha level attainment. He is empowered to appear to close disciples only. After teaching a bit (however long I don't know) Jesus "ascends" to the 'father' (or Brahman) by dematerializing his body (not flying into the clouds I assume). It is only then Yogananda would seem to say that he attains siddhahood or ascension proper. One has to be free of karma from all 3 bodies and has to be free of bodies ALSO to be a siddha or reach ascension, says Yogananda. Anyone that has the higher kriya lessons from SRF will see the grades of Masters and can read this for themselves. The goal is to be an ascended master (siddha). If one comes again after that he is a manifested master (avatar).

As we know, Lahiri Mahasaya resurrected his body in three places after his death. Yogananda did so with at least 7--8 people I am aware of. He also continues to appear to people to this day. Evidently this is a bigger deal than teleportation while in the body. It is harder to do, I mean.

After long examination on Jesus and Easter in the light of Yoga, I have new awareness that the avatars are teachers and everything they do shows us how to attain the goal. It lies with us to do the work in sadhana. This is really the only way to teach, by example.

It remains with others whether they deem Jesus and Yogananda avatars, but I think if you follow what they taught and use their lives as guideposts, you are liable not to care. You will be getting results with God directly. It won't matter so much.

I do not see an avatar as a sacrificial lamb to interce for us weak sinners or to pacify an angry God. I am not referring to Hendrik here, but I have observed that most people who like to talk about avatars and their outward miracles a great deal just don't want to do the sadhana. That's my experience! May everyone attain to Christ consciousness and the states beyond it in this very life.

best

Sundarar
