These mystics did have no inklings of modern technology. Let time speak - in a hundred or two hundred years our grandchildren will have better possibilties to see what is the truth of the matter. I do not believe that there is any barrier to human evolution, we are probably all very ignorant and at the very beginning of understanding, Patanjali and the yogis too.
