I think one thing you do not want to do is look for results after every session. "A watched pot never boils." My experience is that the effects of meditation are cumulative over time. So at first you may become aware that the qualities you experience during meditation start to become integrated into your waking state, qualities like increased relaxation, quiet mind, periods of ananda, etc. As your practice goes on, the integration deepens and other qualities manifest.
There is nothing wrong at all with keeping a spiritual journal, but the general idea is to be as regular as possible in your practice and the results will come. The problem with focusing too much on results is that there can be a tendency to try to force them in daily living, by acting blissful, laid back, steady gaze, etc., without letting the fruits of meditation arise spontaneously. This kind of artificial mood making can get in the way of just being natural.
