I like Dharmananda a lot and have got much benefit from he, Turiyananda, Achalananda and Santoshananda. They can share some deep stuff and are elders on the path.
As far as the 1938 lessons, I think it makes SRF look bad to even be negative about their own 1st editions, let alone something like yoganiketan. They published the 1929 1st edition whispers, the other things should be published also. This is my view. A few things about the 1938 edition: the grammar is bad once in a while, there are 3 positive references to astrology, and there are recipes. The order is also a bit different and the poems and prayers are switched around.
In regards to astrology: PY says in 1938 editioin to consult an astrologer when thinking of marrying, and 2 other spots also he recomends it. Tara Ma was doing SRF's astrology readings I understand. Even Baktananda when asked if this was appropriate by a friend contemplating marriage 10 years ago said, "yes, it won't hurt".
