In sanskrit, Hong and Ham are the same sound, written differently in English of course. Same with Sa and So. To pronounce them verbally or mentally they sound different, but when pronounced by the breath it is the same sound, which can be interpreted by the mind as being either So or Sa, or Hong or Ham. This is a key to deep HS practice, listen to the mantra the breath itself makes. Do not simply superimpose a mental sound upon it.
