Ive read that lesson but it is not the doing of Hong-Sau or Aum technique along with Kriya, it is rather different. It was simply a different way to do first Kriya, a variation that Yogananda himself gave to people. It had to do with the chanting of Pranav mantra during the act of Kriya in the chakras, whereas true Aum technique is to listen to the actual sound of Nada.
The benefit of practicing the Kriya variant was probably something to do with making the pranayam more potent, to reveal the sound of Aum within more efficiently through attunement of the mind with it and also as a kind of preparation for higher Kriya, which uses a different mantra altogether, though it is also repeated in a certain way at the chakras during the performance of Kriya.

The combining of Aum technique and Kriya occurs in one of the higher traditional Kriyas where Yoni mudra is performed along with pranayam and Nada is listened to synonymously. Im not sure if SRF teaches this in any of its higher Kriyas but this technique is actually quoted as being taught by Yogananda to his younger brother Sananda Lal in the latter's book about the former, "Mejda: The Life and Early Years of Paramahansa Yogananda".
