It is a "try to make" but it also points out the standard of what is necessary if you would reach God and be His forevermore. Yogananda himself, for a whole year during his youth, and thereafter on occasion in the ashram of his Guru, found his own meditative efforts to be unproductive, or at least not to his satisfaction.
