Not off hand I cant Ketch, but neither do I find conclusive evidence that he didnt approve of the benefits of such worship for many people (though I must admit Im not much of a scholar). All of the quote you provided is him giving instruction to his bhikkus, not necessarily to all people.

If Buddha considered himself in essence to be the Truth and not the body or mind, as pointed out in his own teachings, then to strive to attain the same Truth is really the same as trying to become Buddha (enlightened). A fully liberated being's character is the aggregate of virtues arising from a clear perception of Truth. You may be familiar with the story in Buddhist teaching of the evil man who hated Buddha with a passion. He thought of him and how much he hated him so often that in the end he became like the Buddha because his concentration had become so intense he achieved samyama on the Buddha-nature as it manifested through the Buddha's character.
