The same is true for most people. This is why the use of definite techniques is such as Kriya Yoga is necessary.

Patajali states that the symbol of God is the sacred sound OM. Through correct meditation it is possible to gain some idea of one aspect of God as OM.

Those who cannot have devotion to an impersonal concept of God, or any personal representation can instead contact the infinite as the peace felt in meditation, and the sound of OM.
