According to Indian tradition there is a layer called the 'subtle physical' or real physical, just behind our material plane which is made of atoms etc. Yogananda also mentioned this somewhere in his Gita.

This is apparently different from the astral planes, which must be more flexible and of a different structure and whose appearance probably changes and depends more on the temporary state of mind of those who travel there.
