Subject: 2 Questions

2 Questions:
QUESTION 1: Where does the ONE MILLION YEARS in the AY come from? Why one million years?

From the AY, CHAPTER: 26, The Science Of Kriya Yoga, see
http://gutenberg.net/.
ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/docs/books/gutenberg/etext05/
ayogi10.zip
or
http://www.crystalclarity.com/yogananda

we read:
The astral system of a human being, with six (twelve by polarity) inner constellations revolving around the sun of the omniscient spiritual eye, is interrelated with the physical sun and the twelve zodiacal signs. All men are thus affected by an inner and an outer universe. The ancient rishis discovered that man's earthly and heavenly environment, in twelve-year cycles, push him forward on his natural path. The SCRIPTURES aver that man requires A MILLION YEARS of normal, diseaseless evolution to perfect his human brain sufficiently to express cosmic consciousness

QUESTION 2: Has anyone (of the ordinary Westerners like you and me) achieved pratyahara, i.e. I pinch you and you don’t notice?

PY’s Kriya Yoga rests heavily on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. See for instance
http://www.yoganiketan.net/patanjali/sadhana.htm

Yoga Sutra II-29

The eight limbs of yoga are:
i. Yama = Don'ts;
ii. Niyama = Do's;
iii. ăsana = Stable Posture;
iv. Prănăyăm = Control of Pranas;
v. Pratyăhăr = Withdrawl of senses from the mind;
vi. Dhărană = Concentration;
vii. Dhyăna = Meditation;
viii.Samădhi = Absorption

Of particular interest is Yoga Sutra II-54

By this, senses are withdrawn from the sense objects -- and they just
conform to the Chitta (thought wave). This is called prtyăhăr

or
Pratyahara is as if imitating citta’s essential nature on the part of the senses, in disconnecting with their sensory objects.
