The cause of suffering is ignorance--in other words, a mistaken view of reality. The mistake is to attribute permanence to that which is impermanent. Belief in a seperate self is the ignorance which is the root of all fear, greed, anger, jealousy, and countless forms of suffering. To walk the path of freedom means to practice looking deeply, so as to really see the nature of impermanence, the absence of any seperate self, and the interdependence of all things. This is the path of the conquest of ignorance. When ignorance is defeated, suffering is transcended. There is no need of any self to attain liberation.
