Subject: Divine Union v. Liberation

The quote at the top of the page from Lahiri Mahasaya "Divine Union is possible through self-effort, and is not dependent on theological beliefs or on the arbitrary will of a Cosmic Dictator." brings up an important distinction that some do not understand. One can be fully self-realized (realize one's union with the Divine) and still not be liberated. The story of Totapuri from The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna illustrates this well. Although Totapuri was a self-realized being, still he could not drown himself in the Ganges because Divine Mother would not allow it. Ramakrishna explained how liberation for a human being is only possible when God wills it, even for a self-realized being. In this sense, it is dependent upon the "arbitrary will of a Cosmic Dictator" in a most literal way.
