"I confess, I DO NOT KNOW. But it seems to me that you are conjecturing a lot...to put yourself at ease about kechari and its attainment. People worry about-- should you have to do it or not--. It is amusing to watch all this discussion about kechari. People seem to have a worrisome attitude about it. It is "clear" that it is not clearly understood."

Thank you for your honest attitude. One could characterize what I say as conjecture, of course, as obviously I am not a direct disciple of Lahiri. I am not posting to put myself at ease, but rather to suggest another way of considering the attainment of kechari.

Kriya pranayam is a method of strengthening the flow of prana. Kechari is properly attained through surrender to prana, after prana has become strengthened either though first kriya or grace of Guru, also called shaktipat. What is clearly not understood in Kriya Yoga circles is surrender to prana. Consider the action of pumping water from a well; after the water is running, pumping is no longer necessary. Kriya pranayam is like pumping the handle on the well pump. After the water is running, one should stop pumping. The cessation of the action of pumping the handle, or surrender to the flow of prana, allows one to experience the "after effect poise" of Kriya. Likewise, it is this same surrender that allows the intelligent energy of prana to guide the attainment of kechari, and many other higher experiences.
