First, let me tell you how pleased I am at the invitation to participate in an exchange of ideas that does not revolve around my experience with childbirth or when to introduce solids. (ha ha!!!) Let me follow that with a resounding - Amen! Once again, Kessel hits it on the head with his observations of the political machine. I, too, hesititate to say that I support Kerry; or that I even know much about the guy. What I like is that he is not Bush. Sad, that we are naturally drawn to ANYTHING that is not George W. I have found myself half-heartedly following the Democratic National Convention as well, tuning in and out the other night as I was making dinner, in time to see Bill Clinton...and I made the same observations about myself as did you, David...I want to believe in something - ANYTHING -especially given current events. I always yearn to buy the words and ideals upon which our great nation was founded - hell, I long to just believe that we indeed are part of a great nation! I struggle between two polarities - loss of faith being the most extreme and negative, and a desire to just have faith in something. Even the most pragmatic and (yes!) difficult among us wish to believe in something. And these men get up, and give these great speeches - nothing more than performances, but oh! What poise, what eloquence, what...the HELL?!
Wanting you to know that I on the same page, disillusioned but hopeful, once again dismayed that there is no charismatic leader to sweep us all away with how RIGHT ON he is! I would gladly drink the poison and jump over the cliff just for the chance to see someone remarkable run for office - just once in my lifetime.
AT any rate, enough romanticizing...it's my birthday and I am going to get drunk and possibly even belligerent tonight. Hope all is well with all...
