To one of the most refreshing teachers I've ever had,
didn't want this to be a compliment bouque but...
David, I have always admired your honesty and it shows as bright as the sun when you teach. Your dismantling of the teacher-student formal structure was definatly amazing and a much more engaging experience than any other style i've ever encountered. Some professors cast the illusion they are level and open and you actually are. More importanly, I learned being open minded does not mean being opinionless yet willing to battle and sift your philosophies at ease with various and, naturally and hopefully, offensive others only to help sharpen your definition of yourself and the world around. What the offended, formal individual fails to realize is that being neutral, formal, politically correct, etc. is still associated with being opinionated although submersivly because its the educational norm (although that is an illusion as well)It just SEEMS less intrusive. Neutrality, in any sense, is a bedfellow with control, censorship, and too oftenly cowdardice. Personally, the teacher who stifles himself by ommiting their perspective is much more offensive, misleading, and dangerious than the teacher being honest to thier perspectives. I would rather be lectured by self-proclaimed die-hard nazi then by G.W. Bush or his cabinet.(assuming either knew something about anything)
I applaude your courage David. Glad to hear your still rattling the cage! hope to join you next fall.
yours
~Andy
