I’ve been doing some reading of Walt Whitman the past few days. (I don’t claim to fully understand his message) Reading the newspaper recently I have seen some quotes of his in support of a more liberal message. My take of Whitman’s work I guess is a bit more holistic, I feel that his words are often taken out of context and applied where and when the need arises. I am wondering somewhat ignorantly if Whitman had a hidden message or if I’m just not getting it. I have not read all of his works but rather only a few.
“Apart from the pulling and hauling stands what I am, Stands amused, complacent, compassionating, idle, unitary,
Looks down, is erect, or bends an arm on an impalpable certain rest
Looking with side-curved head curious what will come next,
Both in and out of the game and watching and wondering at it.”…
“Song of Myself”
Whitman relates in beautiful harmony a self-actualized view of the world that we all can relate to. I feel that his work is often manipulated to push an agenda. He was refered to in the register guard opinions page 12/31/05 in a manner that I felt was not true to his meaning. Am I off base?
