Subject: Hitting Down On The Ball

Was re-reviewing Swing Tip #6 on hitting down on the ball. I know I have problems with not doing this causing my relatively short iron distances. Would a good drill be to put a tee completely in the ground in the center of your stance with the head of the tee flush with the top of the ground and practice trying to hit the top of the tee with no ball? Once you can consistently do this, lay a ball down in the center of your stance and practice hitting with the image of the tee being under the ball and you are trying to hit the top of that tee. Ball is just incidental.

Also, are you supposed to hit down on the ball with fairway woods and hybrid clubs also or are these more of a sweeping motion? Seems like my fairway wood shots are relatively short also. Thanks.

Joel,

Any drill that promotes a descending blow with your irons is beneficial.

Fairway woods are designed to sweep the ball from the turf (not scoop) as opposed to hitting down. This is the reason that they are built to a longer length than the irons which produces a flatter swing plane.
