Why are their different 1 iron club lengths for irons and woods?

Karlos,

The design function of an iron is to pinch the ball against the ground, whereas the design function of a wood is to sweep the ball from the ground.  The sweeping action of the wood requires a flatter swing plane than the descending blow required of an iron, therefore, a longer club length.
