Subject: Know your iron distances to lower your scores

Been playing 1irons for 6 or 7 seasons now, and I absolutely love them. My team won a charity event this past weekend thanks mostly to a lot of good shots into greens by my Stepfather and I. He plays 1irons also. I have some advice for the guys just getting their sets. Spend time at the driving range with each club in your bag, and a good range finder. Pick targets and hit about 25 shots with each club. Determine what your AVERAGE distance is with each club, on a full swing. Average shots, not your best shot of the 25. Write those distances down and make a nice laminated card that you can hang on your golf bag for a reference to be used on the course. You will be amazed at how much confidence you will gain when you KNOW how far each club goes, as opposed to guessing or wishing. And most importantly, don't worry about how far someone else hits their clubs. My 5 iron goes 159 yards on average. That is equivalent to a 7 iron for a lot of guys. My point is, so what? We all have the clubs in our bags to cover almost any distance on a hole. Just get to know what YOUR distances are. Combine that knowledge with the accuracy and repeatable swing you will gain from your 1irons, you will shoot lower scores right away. Good luck to everyone and enjoy the season.

That laminated card is a great idea.

I played a challenging course (1757 near Washington Dulles airport) for the first time recently, and did very well on the front nine because I happened to approach a number of greens with irons whose distance I knew very well.

My new-season swing is still settling in a bit, but I should follow this recommendation soon.

i already tried to make such a distance card for myselfe a while ago, but i am struggeling, because i cant go and measure my shots on the range while there are lots of guys hitting in my direction. i only have a gps rangefinder that allows measuring shots too.. what are you suggesting?
