Subject: If it works, is it the right way?

Hi Fellow Golfers.

I have had the set of woods and irons for about 7 months and average about 12 over which isnt to bad, I know I will get lower scores this year, the funny thing is that something has happened to my game with these clubs that never happened with my previous sets, before I go on I would like to say that the problem is not with any of my woods, the 3,5,7,woods that I use off the fairway are long and straight,I love them, I love my irons too, but, I quite regularly take big divots, sometimes really big ones, I thought I was a good short iron player with my others sets, not much divot and really straight and accurate, and I am with these but why has this started to happen, it has been driving my mad,I would get into a great position to hit the green in regulation then hit a stupid shot with a big divot, well after hours of trying differant things, I changed something, I decided that after I had taken my set up and grounded the club behind the ball I would rise up a little so the club was off the ground, that has made a big differance to my ball striking now and the confidence is flooding back, thats it I thought, but now it does'nt make any sense does it?, if Ive raised up 1/2 an inch then should'nt the clubs be that much longer, I know that I must dip very slightly on the down swing, but I never did this before, so what have I done, have I found the answer to my problem which is right for me but not how these clubs are meant to be used, or do I ground the club and go back to the range to find out why I this. Thanks. Terry

Hi Terry,
Just a quick thought from my experience. Our minds are very powerful things...what I've found is the tendency to get a little closer to the ball when hitting my short irons because that is what I've done for 30+ years. When I really concentrate on keeping the distance from the ball the same as my 7 iron for all shots, my divots and ball flight are more consistent and accuracy improves dramatically. Standing a little further away with your short irons will probably help you flatten out your swing and avoid hitting the "big ball before the little ball" (that overly steep swing that makes you hit fat). One of the big benefits to the 1Iron system is getting your mind and body grooved into one swing plane..but it does take some work to get your mind to cooperate.
Good luck...

Terry,

I believe that Mark has hit the nail on the head. The cause of your divots is more mental than physical. If you use the same set-up, ball position, swing, etc. with every iron and simply try to tick the spot under the ball with the sole of the clubhead on every shot then this problem should be eliminated.
