Subject: 1 Iron Wedges

I received my set of 1 Iron Wedges (GW,SW,LW) a few days ago. I have been playing 1 Iron clubs (3-PW) for about 2 months now and have been playing my best golf ever. My normal wedges started feeling a little awkward because they were so much shorter than my irons and because the swing was different so I decided to order a set of Wedges. I was a little apprehensive playing wedges with the longer shafts but I must say, after spending a couple of days at the range, I really like them! What's nice is that on full swings, I don't even have to think about it, since its the exact same swing as my irons.

I'll be taking them to the course tomorrow and looking forward to using them "in play".

I did make one change after the first day of practice...I had the wedges re-griped to a standard size grip (as are my other 1iron clubs now). The mid-sized grips just didn't feel right to me. The second day of practice with the new grips was even better.

I was just wondering why hand size isn't taken into consideration when getting measurments for the clubs? I have to think that others also have problems with thicker grips. I've also read that over-sized grips make it harder to release the clubs properly.

Thanks,

Marcel

Marcel,

We have found over the years that grip sizing is one of personal preference and not one of proper fitting. Realistically, there is no such thing as a correct grip size for a golf club just as there is no correct grip size for a spoon and fork, pencil, chopstick, or even a surgeon's scalpel. I have known many golfers with small hands who prefer a jumbo grip on their golf clubs and, by the same token, many golfers with huge hands who prefer undersized grips. Across the board we have found that the vast majority of golfers, regardless of hand size, prefer a mid-size grip (1/16” larger than standard), which is what we install. As in your case, if a golfer prefers a different size or type of grip than what we install they can re-grip their clubs without fear of affecting the playability of the golf club whatsoever.

Contrary to what is promulgated about grip size affecting the ability to release the golf club through impact, this is simply a myth.

Thanks David. Perhaps something to consider in the future would be to allow golfers that already know their preference for grip size to be able to select between standard and mid-size so that they won't have to incur the additional expense (and delay in using their clubs) from having to regrip their clubs. Just a suggestion.

Also thanks for clearing up the myth.

Marcel
