Bill,

I do not believe that there is any particular ball that is superior to another as far as overall performance is concerned. The most important point is that you choose one brand and type of golf ball and stick with it. The biggest mistake I see with the average golfer is that they carry a dozen different types and brands of golf balls in their bag - some purchased, some received as gifts, and others picked up on the course (lost balls?). Consequently, they will never find any consistency in their game because each ball will perform differently.

Personally, I prefer the Top-Flite XL line of golf balls which I have used exclusively for over fifteen years. They keep their roundness better than any other brand I have tested and produce excellent distance and accuracy.

David I am interested to know what you mean by the balls keeping their roundness better, what sort of testing have you done on balls? Do you find that you can stop the Top Flite balls on the green with the I iron clubs or do you just alter your playing strategies?
Thank you.

Mark,

There is a little gadget that you can pick up at any golf store that very accurately determines the roundness of a golf ball. It is a square piece of metal with a hole in the center that is the diameter of a golf ball. You simply place the ball into the hole and rotate it. If the ball hangs up then it is out of round. I have used this gadget for many years and the most consistently round ball that I have found are Top-Flites. Also, the Top-Flites maintain their roundness better than other balls that I have tested. For instance, the most popular 3-piece ball on the market tends to go out of round after being played only four or five holes whereas the Top-Flites generally last round after round.

I have no problem stopping the ball on the green.

>David, thank you for your reply, as with other posts you once again answer with graciousness and professionalisim. Can I be so bold as to ask which Top Flite model you use? I realise that at times that can start a stampede on your recommended product and you get the blame if it doesn't do what folks are looking for, but how about we look at it as a fact of what you use and not a recommendation? Many thanks, Mark

Mark,

I have been using the Top-Flite XL line of golf balls for over ten years. It does not matter which particular XL golf ball that I prefer - what does matter is that a golfer finds one that he likes and sticks with it.

Look up "All In One Golf Tool", amazon.com sells em for 2.95. It is a club or cigar rest, turns any club into a ball retriever, repairs ball marks, cleans club grooves, and checks ball roundness for improved putting and accuracy. I had one but lost it, think I'll steal the wife's! As well I bought 18 dozen mint Top Flite Infinities for $127.00 Canadian tax and shipping in from Knetgolf.com. I have been buying balls from them for years and have never been disappointed. The top flites are 50% off right now. so I ended up paying 7.05 a dozen all in. You can get xl's in Canada for 5 bucks a dozen mint. Cheaper on their U.S. site. If you buy over $75.00 worth you get free shipping in the states. $99.00 in Canada gets you free shipping. That's why I bought so many. Pat

>>Thanks Pat, I am in New Zealand so stuff costs me quite a bit more if I buy from the states due to the value of our dollar. I am just about to order a full set of 1 irons and have found this site and forum intrigueing. For instance I had never heard anyone rate Top Flite balls before. All the magazines etc do all their tests and hot lists and they have never featured anywhere. But as I said above, I had never considered that a ball can lose it's shape so quick either which now has me looking to try some Top Flites out. The XL range is their cheapest ball I think?
I am very excited about the prospect of hitting accurate repeatable shots with the new clubs if they deliver what everyone is saying, and I believe they will.

Mark,

I would stay away from the Top-Flite Range ball. Like it's name implies it is designed for driving range use which translates into a very low compression rating. The low compression rating makes the ball more durable which is what you want with a range ball; however, for performance you want a higher compression rating.

Thanks David, sorry my mistake, I meant the whole XL range of balls. Was going to try some of the Pure Distance, more carry first.
Regards, Mark
