Subject: Senior swinger

I am a senior and on a good day in July, when I am nice and warmed up and I have at least 2 Ibuprofen on board, I can MAYBE get a clubhead speed of 90mph. This would be with a very light graphite shaft. I will agree that a major determinant in distance is hitting the ball squarely and that the "one length" club throughout the set may improve on ball striking but the other factor is clubhead speed and I just can't believe that I will be able to hit as far with a steel shaft as I can with a graphite shaft.
Any seniors out there who can reflect on this?

hi john, I am 52 years old, been golfing 4 full years now. My swing speed when I started was lower than yours, now its about the same as yours. I bought my first set of 1 iron clubs maybe 3 yrs. ago. I had the same thoughts as you did, so I took two bags out on a cart, and would hit my graphite 7 iron, then the 1 iron 7 iron, I also used other irons in my experiment. This experiment worked best with 7 iron to 7 iron, and there was no difference at all with those clubs. Trying to hit a 3 iron graphite thats a couple inches longer than my 1 iron clubs was difficult after getting used to hitting the same length clubs. I can hit a graphite 3 iron slightly farther off a tee than I can my 1 iron 3 iron off a tee. Off the fairway or in the rough I can hit my 1 irons slightly farther now than my old graphites. It doesnt make sense, but hitting the sweet spot is my guess is why it works so well. I rarely hit a fat or thin shot anymore either with any of my clubs, using the 1 irons has just cleaned up my game all around. My handicap has dropped pretty dramatically since using 1 iron clubs.
