Mark,

Be patient. For those who have been playing conventional length golf clubs for a number of years it takes time to make the physiological and mental transition to playing single length golf clubs. This is especially true in the fairway woods and driver where you are used to playing the ball forward in your stance. The 1 Iron woods are designed to be played using a center of stance ball position and there will be a transitional period where your body will unconsciously make the necessary changes in timing, weight shift, etc. As well, it takes time to acclimate yourself to using a single club length for all of the irons. Initially you will unconsciously make your ingrained conventional #3 iron swing when playing a 1 Iron #3 iron and your ingrained conventional PW swing when playing a 1 Iron PW. These are ingrained habits that will correct themselves over time through a number of trips to the range.

You will want to read the playability tips again and go over the swing as discussed in our book. You will soon find the 1 Iron Steel Driver and fairway woods performing beyond your expectations. The end result is that when you become fully acclimated to using the single swing and center of stance ball position you will experience ball striking ability and distance that you never thought possible.

David

David, thanks for the reply and encouragement. I certainly believe in the system and am committed to working with it. I love the clubs and i agree with you in that I have a lot of stuff to relearn and let go of to get the most from my 1 irons. As with most of us amatuers we want it to happen yesterday and get frustrated that we have to practice and take the time necesary. Thanks again.
Regards,
Mark

Mark:

If it's any encouragement; I hit all my 1Iron clubs high, including the driver. My distance on the driver is relatively equal to that of any other driver I've ever owned. The difference is in accuracy. I've never hit a driver anywhere near as accurately as David's. I'm closing in on 90% of fairways on a regular basis which for me is astounding. My misses are much better as well. That stat alone is so helpful to the rest of my game. I could always get down the fairway pretty well, but to be IN the fairway this much is everything. I have trouble getting the irons not to fly high, so don't sweat it; it's definitely possible. I use a single-axis swing, by the way. Keep hitting the clubs and you will increase your ability with them, I'm sure. Just be a little patient, and good luck.

Thanks Jimblob, I feel part of my problem may have been the fact that I was driving through on the down swing, an old habit from forward ball position, and delofting the club while also leaving it open a bit. By sticking with the playability tips and rereading the book I think I am on the way. Hit some beautiful high and straight 3/4 irons yesterday, will work with the driver and 3w today.
thanks

Hi mark, somewhere I read that 1iron clubs have a higher ball flight, I think it was the kick point in the shaft. When I first got davids clubs, my distance went down slightly, but ball flight was much higher. Distance is now a little more, but since ball flight is higher, its actually almost a club more distance if that makes sense. I hit an 8 iron on a par 3 we have, and everybody thinks I am hitting my pitching wedge. Once you get used to your clubs, and gain confidence, there is nothing quite like it,,,good luck ed

Thanks Ed, I must admit I am still struggling with the driver and 3w, I think I am trying to hard, need to relax and swing smoothly rather than the hit it hard feeling I think is happening trying to make it work. A work in progress. I know from the many testimonials on here that it will happen, just need to give it time.

Mark:

I've tried varied ball positions with the 1 Iron driver and fairway woods and have settled on a left heel ball position with the driver and slightly left of center with the fairway woods. My ball flight is high and sweet.

Man I've tried all sorts, I just don't seem to be able to get it. It is costing me about 4-5 strokes a round at the moment, but I am determined to get it. Will keep trying.

Oh, oh, sounds like you're now playing a guessing game while trying to actually play a round. That will never ever work Mark. Believe me you'll die trying. You need to dial it in on the range. Work out the technical side of the swing there without any consideration to where the ball is going. It takes 21 straight days to ingrain a new habit, and that's not me but Ben Hogan, Roger Maltbie (Range Rats author)Tiger, etc. If the driver is giving you woes right now use your 3w until it gets going. STAY POSITIVE, these clubs work. I overanylized, overswung, and drove myself over the edge. Now my swing is like I don't think that ball will go 100 yards but crisp clean hits with all irons and fw woods, I've just started working on the driver but I am pleased with it. I can do without it as the 3w is about 230-250 yards and my wife likes my driver, woe is me. I have taken my 7w out of the bag as my 3 and 4 irons are things of beauty now, all due to working with the short(8i and up) and switching right to the 3 or 4 or 5i and making the exact same swing. The big thing is get it out of our heads which club it is. Just swing them the same. I use the Ben Hogan's 5 lessons, the best book ever written, arguabley, having come over from natural golf. I've spent the winter just holding the club, practicing half swings in the house. I hold them elbows in close to the body and sunny side up right through the swing, feels weird but zingers are the result and accurrate as heck. But remember this above all the course is not the place to learn a new swing or guess on ball positions. Best of Luck. Pat Morris

Thanks Patrick, I am generally not trying to do this on the course, its just that I had to play a couple of rounds inbetween. I am mostly working on my own at the range. The irons are superb, I am hitting them all so well. We have 2 par 3's at our course which are 199 and 207 yds and my 3 iron got me onto both greens both days, so obviously thrilled with the irons. It's just the woods I am struggling with. I will do like you suggest and just work with the 3w first and leave my driver at home. I won't be playng another round for 3 weeks so hopefully get some sort of consistency by then otherwise I will be just teeing off with my 3 iron.
Cheers
