Subject: David, thanks for the clubs

Hello David, The clubs arrived in the U.K. a few days after I ordered them, I have been to the range and followed your playing tips, iron progressing nicely but a question about the woods, I am hitting the woods off to the right on a middle stance and the 3 wood has quite a low ball flight, and a bit behind in distance compared to my calloway 3 wood, I have not progressed to the 1 wood yet,no problems with the irons though, truly a class above my last set,any tips would be very well recieved, thanks again. Terry

Terry,

The cause of your fairway wood problem is that you are not yet comfortable with using a center of stance ball position. It takes a few trips to the range to acclimate yourself to this new ball position as it affects timing, weight transfer. etc. What is happening is that your weight is actually in front of the ball at impact and your wrists have not yet released (this is common initially when a golfer goes from a forward ball position to a center of stance ball position). If you concentrate on staying behind the ball while using a center of stance ball position you will see your performance level increase dramatically. Also, it is very important to make a controlled swing as this will help you to ingrain the correct timing and release using the new ball position.

Terry:

I bought all the irons and all the woods a few months ago. The first time I used them at the driving range I hit the 7-iron on down like a pro but I had trouble with the 6-iron on up and the same trouble that you're having with the woods. When I got back home I did some reflection and realized that since all the irons are identical there was only one reason that I was having trouble with the 3,4,5,and 6 irons and that had to be me. I read David's book again, especially the section where he discusses the swing and found the answer - after years of playing conventional golf clubs the farther forward the ball position was in my stance the more I swayed to the right on the backswing and to the left on the downswing. David points out that any lateral movement during the swing will result in poor ball striking and lessend power. In addition he states that it is impossible to bring the club behind you on the backswing if you sway laterally to the right.

The next day I went back to the range with these thoughts in mind and warmed up with the 7-iron where I never sway during the swing and hit five perfect shots. I then went to the 6,5,4,and 3 hitting five shots each and concentrating on keeping the center of my chest stationary (right over the ball) throughout the swing to eliminate any swaying motion. This forced me to bring the club around behind my body during the backswing instead of straight out to the right like you do when you sway to the right. It felt odd at first but I hit every shot pure and with a trajectory that I'd never seen. I moved on to the 7-wood and even though I tried to use the same swing I noticed that I was swaying to the right out of habit. When I forced myself to remain stationary like I did with the irons and bring the club around me instead of out to the side I started hitting the most beautiful wood shots of my life. I had the same results with the 5 and 3 woods.

My advice is that if you have David's book study it thoroughly and not just read through it. I watched a golf tournament on television shortly after this and noticed that the center portion of the chest of the pros never moves to the right or left during the swing with any golf club.

Kyle.
Thankyou very much for your help, the iron play is comeing along nicely, the woods progress is slow but improveing, on the last hole I hit the 3 wood 244 onto the green, Im
still trying to figure what I did right, thanks again, do you use the 1 wood?

Terry,

You need to delete the old message in the "type your message here" box before you add a reply to keep it cleaner. I have the #1 wood and hit it great but I position the ball off my left heel and tee it up so that the ball is in the center of the clubface. I'm especially conscious of not swaying during the swing with the #1 wood because it will cause you all kinds of trouble with any driver.

Thanks again Kyle.
Working like mad to get the best out of the clubs, although I have bought the 1,3,5,7, woods and the 5,6,7,8,9,pw,sw, I will order the 4,3, irons so I can really mix it up, the links courses here are not for the faint hearted so it pays to keep the ball flight a bit lower sometimes, take care, Terry
