Yes at impact the the arm and club makes one long line but the force was generated PRIOR to impact not at the impact. And the majority of the force was generated during the unhinging action.

Without hinging and unhinging, the club head will arc through one big circle. But by delaying unhinging during down swing, the club head is positioned further back from the club position in that big circle. When the club is released just before the impact, it has to catch up that distance at a fraction of time. An object that moves the same distance at shorter time has to accelerate(the catch up) and that generates higher force(force is proportional to acceleration given the same mass by Newton's law).

Imagine that you are hitting a nail with a hammer with fixed wrist. It's less powerful than using the snap of your wrist even though at the impact your arm and the hammer makes the same line for both case. The unhinging action accelerates the hammer and generates bigger force.

Does this not occur with a 7 iron and a 3 iron?

It's not a pendulum at all. It's what is called a 3rd class lever. Think of throwing a fishing lure with a fishing rod. If you tried to use a pendulum motion to throw it, it would not go very far at all. But by applying pressure to the shaft on the short side just above the fulcrum point, energy is stored in the flex of the shaft and the tip speed of the long side of the lever increases as the ratio of the long side to the short side. Thus the tip speed is much greater than if it were just a pendulum effect. I would think that the reason 1iron shots go as far as regular clubs after some practice is that as you easily become able to hit the ball in the center of the club face every time, your confidence builds, and you are able to increase your swing speed and develop consistent timing. Hmm, I have just about convinced myself to order a set.

Wayne, Thanks for the clarification. How would you estimate club head speed differences? All the clubs are are being swung using the same forces, the only difference is the length of the club/arm (and the only thing that changes would be the length of the club), acting as a lever traveling through space around some point or fulcrum.
