Subject: Yardage spacing between clubs

Iron Byron aside - To those of you using the 1-Iron golf clubs, what are your carry yardages for each of your irons?

For a full swing, I carry the following distances. Note - I live at 4200', so the air is a little thinner here. Also, I am 6'3" tall and my clubs at 1/2" longer than standard.

60* LW - 75 yds
56* SW - 100 yds
50* GW - 115 yds
46* PW - 132 yds
42* 9i - 143 yds
38* 8i - 155 yds
34* 7i - 168 yds
30.5* 6i - 185 yds
27* 5i - 200 yds

I know that this will be different for everybody and the numbers are not necessarily transferable to me or anybody else. However, I would like to see the yardage spacing that 'Joe Golfer' out there is experiencing with their 1-iron systems.

A second question that I have is in regards to the 1-Iron grips. Why a midsized grip? Is having a midsized grip an integral component of the 1-Iron system? I find a midsized grip uncomfortably large.

Lastly, I am assuming that the clubs are approved by the USGA for competition. Am I assuming correctly? Will future club heads conform to the new USGA groove rules? If so, when will we see a change in the grooves?

Thanks ahead of time for the feedback.

Our golf clubs are fully conforming to all USGA rules both current and pending, and they have been played in PGA Tour events.

Our grips are larger than what you might call mid-size as they are 1/8" oversize. You may want to click on the following link for more information on grip sizing: http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs015/1101452092206/archive/1102065821532.html

Hi David,

Thanks for the response about the grips and the clubs. Do you use the standard grip or do you have a preference for something specific?

I've had my 1 Irons for three years and my carry only distances are:
#3 - 200yds
#4 - 190yds
#5 - 180yds
#6 - 170yds
#7 - 160yds
#8 - 150yds
#9 - 140yds
PW - 130yds
GW - 120yds
SW - 110yds
LW - 100yds

The biggest factor for me is that I hit my #3 iron just as consistently as my PW which was impossible with my old Pings.

Mike, thanks for replying. Looks like very consistent spacing between clubs. Over your 3 years of using the clubs, did you find an improvement in scores/handicap?

I shot in the mid-90s with no improvement from year to year for the ten years prior to getting my 1 Irons. The first year with the 1 Irons I got down to shooting in the high 80s consistently; in the second year I got down to the mid and low 80s consistently; and in the past year I've shot half of my rounds in the upper 70s. I'll never go back to regular golf clubs again.

Richard, I'm about 25 yards less per club now with conventional clubs. Did you have similar yardages with your conventional clubs prior to trying the 1-irons? I'm also 58.

I've increased my distances about 4 yards with every iron over my old Pings.

Robert, I haven't tried the 1-Irons. I am currently using some conventional clubs. And like I noted, I am rather tall, have long arms and clubs slightly longer than standard and generate quite a bit of club head speed without having to swing out of my shoes. As with most golfers, I am always interested in improving my shots and lowering my scores. I was inquiring what some of those using the 1Irongolf system were experiencing in regards to carry distances with their clubs. I recently stumbled across the 1Irongolf website and am 'surveying' the idea.

The idea interested me because I've noticed in my own golf, with conventional clubs, that there is a definite difference in my setup with SW-8i and the 7i and 'longer' clubs. When I swing my 7i I get the feeling that I am suddenly reacihing out more. In general, I hit my mid and long-irons ok. Certainly, I could always improve. Is this the way to do it? I don't know yet. I don’t think I would want all of my clubs the same length as my 7i though since I am more comfortable with the 8i length.

The idea of a single length shaft for all of the clubs and a single weight for all of the club heads is intriguing. Some of the arguments presented in favor of the 1Irongolf system are a little flimsy and could be presented better. Is it a big deal? Not really. I don't think that is what the 1Irongolf folks are really getting at.

If I summarize the overall jist of 1Irongolf, in my own words, it is that the changes in distance due to club length are negligible compared to the improvements you will make in ball striking and shot results throughout your entire set of 1-Iron clubs.

In short, if you can maximize the number of good and great shots and minimize the damage from bad shots, your scores and game will improve. I agree with that premise.

I am going to have to give this some thought over the winter. My biggest concern is shaft stiffness. I believe that shaft stiffness needs to complement swing speed and release point. I’ve used regular flex shafts, stiff flex shafts, and have hit clubs with x-stiff and senior flex shafts. I’ve even swung my wife’s clubs at the driving range. I can tell the difference in shaft stiffness immediately. The senior flex shafts feel like a wet noodle and the x-stiff feel like a 2x4. I use a stiff flex shaft in all my clubs. I’m not sure that the folks there at 1Irongolf even have an option for custom ordering a stiff flex shaft. Perhaps their standard shaft really does work well with all swing speeds and release points. I think they are trying to keep things geared to the average golfer out there. This keeps the number of parts they have to order and inventory at a minimum. I might be outside their target customer.

Anyway, thanks for replying.

I don't think that you quite get the idea of their balanced shaft concept. I've been playing 1 Irons for a couple of years and my distances have increased across the board. I prefer stiff flex shafts and my 1 Irons are perfect for me. By the same token my wife plays 1 Irons and she says the flex is perfect for her also. Don't forget that Jaacob Bowden who is a long drive champ and who plays on the PGA European Tour plays 1 Irons and he has nothing but praise for the concept and their balanced shafting method - this is from his postings on his Swingman Golf website.

Donald, I must have missed that in my reading. Thanks.

Richard,
I ran an extensive thread about 6 months ago about my experience with the 1 iron system. When I got the irons in January, I had been hovering for the past couple years around a 2-4 Index. This month I am a 1.8 trending to a 1.3. I am 49 and intend on finishing my golfing life with Davids clubs. As for shafts, "forget about it" I have 7 sets of Hogans in my garage with various shafts. #4 and #5 flex, Rifle and 400 shafts. The 1 irons have better feel and more consistent flex characteristicts than any of my Hogans. All of my friends who have tried them on the range have the same comment, "wow, those feel nice" Just measure yourself, buy a set, and be committed to spending some time on the range "adapting" to the simplicity of a single set up and swing plane. Cheers

Richard, I am 220, wife's 105, we both happily use 1irons. That is all, cheers. Paddy
