Subject: stainless steel irons

david,has any other manufacturers ever used any thing close to your grade of stainless steel on their irons?do you know what the stan thompson irons in the past were made of? just curious,and thanks for this website.

Brian,

Due to the very high cost of the premium 17-4 stainless steel that is used in the casting of 1 Iron clubheads, only the top-of-the-line (most expensive) irons in the golf industry are cast from it. I am not aware of any component clubheads that are cast from anything other than much less expensive and, in my opinion, far inferior 431 stainless steel or a very cheap (inferior) grade of 17-4 stainless steel. I do not know what steel was used in Stan Thompson clubheads.
