Subject: Outdriving the taylormade R9

Just wanted to let everyone know about some fun I had with my buddy today. He just bought the Taylormade R9 adjustable driver for about $400. He was all proud and showing it off to everyone. I then proceeded to knock it about 15 yards past him all day long, using my 1iron driver. I also hit all but 2 fairways, and those weren't by much. Accuracy is more important than distance, but having both is awesome. By the way, I am 5'7'', 160lbs, 37 years old. My buddy is 6'1", 205lbs, and 30 years old. I wish you could see his face. As I always say, buy the clubs, they will change your game!

That is killer. I have the old R7 and have been struggling for years to keep it in the fairway. I have the rest of the 1 iron set and really like them so far. I have been wondering if I could get better control from the 1 iron driver. My distance is about 230-260 off of the tee. And I want more distance. I am about 5'4" but I feel like i could generate the swing speed if i just had better technique. I have slowed down my tempo in order to gain more control but have suffered a loss in distance. Did you see a change right away, or did it take you a while?

So, if you don't mind me asking, what do you think your average distance is on drives with the 1iron driver? You have the titanium one right?
Was your WTF something like 32"?

I'm using the Diablo 10* driver, and have started to set up with the ball mostly near the middle of my stance. I get some pretty decent drives most of the time, but invariably two drives or so will end up in the woods. I can get about 260-265 most of the time.

It took me about 2 months to groove my driver swing with the 1iron driver. I had to fight the tendency to swing up on the ball like I have done for years with a conventional driver. Now I tee it up dead center in my stance with a square face. I take a slow backswing, and I just let the downswing happen. David's "skipping stones" description is accurate. You would not believe the club head speed you get by NOT trying to generate it. The ball comes off the tee a little lower than my old 9.5* R7, but super straight. I get about 220 yards of carry, and another 30-50 yards of roll. I was never a long driver, but I am a good 20 yards longer with the 1iron driver. The best part is not the distance, its being in the fairway while you buddies are looking in the rough. My advice to everyone is don't worry about getting longer, worry about getting straighter. Straighter WINS games. I have won a lot of matches this year, and I credit the 1irons and a little more range time. The 1iron driver is lofted higher to give you about the same launch angle as you would get with a lower lofted driver that you have to hit on the upswing. You don't hit the 1iron driver on the upswing, it is hit at the bottom of the arc. That is what takes some getting used to. Once you do, look out. You will be as long or longer than you used to be, and you will be much more accurate. You can also work the ball by just moving the ball forward or back in your stance to produce a draw or fade. No more manipulating the face and opening and closing the stance. It is really cool, everyone should try it.

Same here except I hit my 1 Iron driver about 270 carry while I got maybe 250 with my old driver. You've got to develop your feel and get your timing down but this driver produces some amazing results.

I literally kill the 1 Iron driver as well. The center of stance ball position and eliminating the sway from my swing took some getting used to but I've added 30 yards to my tee shot and it's right down the middle of the fairway every time.
