Paul,

The most important tip that I can give you is to use the exact same swing with every iron. It sounds simple, but after playing conventional irons for a few years you will unconsciously revert to your old #3 iron swing when trying to hit a 1 Iron Golf #3 iron. That is why we stress a few trips to the range in order to force your mind to accept, through repetition, using the same swing with all of the irons.

It is also extremely important not to try and overpower your #3 iron. Unconsciously you realize that this is supposed to be a distance club and without realizing it will try to muscle your way through a shot. Until you develop your timing/feel, and most importantly acclimate yourself to using the same swing with every iron, you will unconsciously swing much harder with your #3 iron than your #8 or #9 iron. This is why we suggest in the Playability Tips that you received with your 1 Irons to hit only half and three-quarter shots the first couple of days.

I would suggest that on your next trip to the range you only take your #3 iron. Hit half and three-quarter shots using a controlled swing until you start gaining comfort and confidence. Gradually work yourself up to a full (controlled) swing, not coming out of your shoes, and you should see a dramatic increase in your performance.

By the way, I would never personally hit any iron off of a tee at the practice range. This promotes the tendency to scoop the ball rather than to hit down and through.

Thanks for the input, Mr. Lake. As my professor in the Kineseology of the Golf Swing lecture (probably the coolest college class in history) told me, I do have a habit of swinging way too hard...tomorrow I will take just the 3 iron and work on hitting partial shots like you say, hopefully that will bring some control to my swing. And I'm not in the habit of hitting teed-up irons at the range, I just hit 1 or 2 for kicks and to see if I could get any trajectory at all out of the 3. The shots have improved after the second and third day.
