Subject: Off Center Hits

I've been to the driving range about five times with my new clubs and have been adjusting to the new swing quite well, but I'm having difficulty making contact in the center of the club face. I do fine with half and three-quarter swings, but when I make a full swing contact is made toward the toe on all my irons. I've tried adjusting my setup position to the point of aligning the ball with the extreme heel of the club, but contact is always toward the toe. Any suggestions out there?

Hi Ron,
This has traditionally been my miss although with the 1 Irons, my misses are closer to the heel. Don't try to correct the swing flaw with a big change in alignment as this will create other problems. The sweet spot on the 1 Irons is much closer to the heel than you may realize, set up with the ball about a half inch towards the heel, the toe of the club should be slightly elevated to allow for clubhead droop, and feel the position ofyour hands. When you swing through the ball, maintain this hand hieght position. If you are constanly toein gthe ball and not raising you swing center, you probably are lowering you hands through the ball.
Hope this helps,
Steve

Ron,

You are still in the stage of "getting used to" the feel of your new irons. Your swing, timing, feel, etc. will come around automatically through repetition (a couple more trips to the range) and you should start making center-face contact consistently. One important point I might mention is that during this period do not even look at your old set of irons. If you go back and forth between your old irons and new irons you will never be able to develop the new feel/timing and you will not be able to in-grain your single swing.

By the way, the "sweet spot" (vertical plane) on all of our golf clubs is directly in the center of the scoring line area. (The horizontal position is much lower than the center of the scoring line area).

David
