Subject: Lie Angle

I'm on the brink of buying a set of 1iron irons, but one specification worries me: The very upright lie angle.

(My WTF measurement is 40".)

One set of irons I now play is Mizuno MP-11. The 8I is 38" long, and has a lie angle of 61*, and it seems a little bit too upright already! At address, if I set up the way I feel comfortable, the toe is up off the ground, not soled out perfectly. At a lie of 63.5*, I'm so afraid the 1iron is going to be just too upright for me.

Please convince me it's going to be okay.

Roger,

Even when custom fitted by a so-called "professional club fitter" using dynamic club testing it is virtually impossible for a golfer with a W-T-F measurement in your range to be properly fitted. Let me explain:

Just like learning to walk or to ride a bicycle, ball striking skill is developed unconsciously through trial and error at the range. Our objective is to hit a golf ball and our bodies will learn through trial and error how to accomplish this task. This is good, but there is a potential downside. If we learn to play golf using clubs that do not fit properly (which with your very high W-T-F measurement is a given) our bodies will unconsciously find a way to perform this task by adapting to the ill-fitting equipment. What this produces are the unconventional and sometimes laughable swing postures and swings that we see every day on the golf course. However, these swings are necessary in order to compensate for golf clubs that do not come close to fitting properly. Our bodies have found the best swing capable of producing desired results using poor tools and these swings will become a part of our muscle memory over time. This is where the limitations of dynamic club fitting come into play. If a golfer gets dynamically fitted for golf clubs using the poor swing and swing posture that they developed using their old ill-fitting golf clubs, the result will be new ill-fitting golf clubs.

Our fitting model is based upon the wrist-to-floor measurement and is the culmination of fifteen years of intense study in this area. Our irons incorporate the same lie angle (based upon the ideal swing posture and swing plane), throughout the set. The proper length of the irons is then determined based upon this ideal lie angle in relation to the wrist-to-floor measurement of the individual golfer. There is a mathematical correlation between a golfer’s wrist-to-floor measurement while standing at attention and the distance from the butt-end of the golf club to the ground at impact during the golfer's swing (assuming the ideal swing and swing plane). After determining the distance from the butt-end of the golf club to the ground at impact via the W-T-F measurement, the proper club length is calculated using a trigonometry formula (an imaginary line drawn from the butt-end of the golf club to the ground forms one side of a right triangle). By incorporating the known lie angle of the clubhead into this formula you can solve for the hypotenuse, or golf club length. Obviously this is an over-simplification as shaft deflection, etc. is also incorporated into the calculation. Since these equations are designed around the known ideals for swing posture and swing plane they result in the proper club length for all golfers regardless of height or arm length.

It is vitally important to play with golf clubs of the correct length and lie angle as this unconsciously forces you into the ideal swing posture and swing plane which in turn optimizes skeletal and muscle functions during the golf swing. As before, you will unconsciously learn to hit the ball with this proper fitting, the difference being that through repetition you will unconsciously be adapting to the ideal swing posture and swing plane.

It is true that when a golfer has been properly fitted for golf clubs it will take time to get used to the correct posture that this proper fitting dictates (for the taller golfer this is a much more upright posture than they are used to). However, once the posture adjustments are realized the golfer will experience power and control that they never thought possible.
