Tom,

The problem you are having with your driver is a very common and simple one. After years of playing a conventional driver with the ball played off the left heel and teed high you, just like every other golfer in the world, have developed the tendency to sway during your swing. Because the ball is played so far forward the tendency is to sway to the right on the backswing and then sway to the left on the downswing/follow-through in order to reach a ball placed forward in the stance. Not only does this swaying motion reduce your potential power tremendously but it also guarantees a slice.

When we suggest a slightly forward ball position we mean one or two balls to the left of center maximum and then over time moving the ball back toward center. There should be absolutely no swaying to the right on the backswing and no swaying to the left on the downswing/follow-through. Your belly button should remain in the center of your stance throughout the swing just like with every other club in your bag. The idea is to swing around your body as if your spine were attached to a pole in the ground. This is what gives you power and control in your swing and also produces a "snap-the-whip" affect through impact.

One other important point is to let the club do the work and not try to overpower the shot.

David

I also found that I was fading / slicing badly with the new driver. I agree with David that this might be related to the mid ball position and the lateral swaying.

Anyway, I discovered a simple way to correct the problem. I simply flattened my swing. I know I have a tendency to come "out to in" and deliberately keeping the driver as low as possible on the backswing has resulted in a lovely draw.

Excellent distance and very consistent.

John has hit the nail on the head. The swing with the driver and fairway woods should be on a much flatter swing plane than the swing with the irons. The design function of a wood is to sweep the ball rather than to pinch it as is the case with an iron. I like to use the analogy of skipping a stone across the water when I am hitting a wood shot.
