Paul,

Some stronger golfers like to carry a wedge in the 64º or 65º loft angle range as well as a #2 iron in the 15º or 16º loft angle range. However, there is a point of diminishing returns where the addition of a higher lofted incremental iron (as in a very high lofted wedge) or a lower lofted incremental iron (as in a #2 iron) produces very poor results for the average golfer. In fact, only about 2% of the entire golfing population (the extremely strong hitter) can play a #2 iron or a very high lofted wedge effectively. For this reason we limited our designed loft angle range in our irons from 19º (#3 iron) to LW (59º).

Gotcha. Just for my own knowledge though, am I on target regarding the short game (chips and pitches, not full shots)? I don't have the years of experience with wedge play that some people do, but so far I've had as much/more success with my X wedge than any other. I'm wondering if, assuming he initially started learning the short game with an X wedge to develop the proper feel and whatnot, a really solid wedge player would feel the same way or if there is some confounding variable that makes a (comparably) lower-lofted wedge the best choice for a serious player.

Paul,

I am not saying that a very high lofted wedge has lessened value for a skilled golfer, I am only saying that it would not particularly be of help to the vast majority of recreational golfers who play at an average level. There is another consideration and that is the fourteen club limit. For every wedge that you add you have to eliminate another club from your bag.
