Subject: Driver tee height

Hi David.

Well I've been back playing with my 1irons for about a month and am extremely pleased with them. I shot 83 on Sunday, after 2 years away from the game, I think that is a tribute to your clubs. For all the doubters out there, I hit my 1iron 3 iron about 190 yds. I am no Tiger Woods, but that is better than most of the guys I play with. CLUB LENGTH DOESN'T MEAN SQUAT.

Now for my question, I am still fading the driver way too much. The distance is good, but the ball is still working too far right. I have never hit a driver from a center ball position, so I am still experimenting. How high should the ball be teed? It seems to me that maybe I should try a much lower tee height, and swing the driver more like a fairway wood. I hit my fairway woods very straight. Perhaps even grazing the ground like a 3 wood?
I am still using a "driver swing" with a strong grip and a high tee. This is producing a few good shots mixed in with weak fades. I shot my 83 using my 3 wood off the tee, that's what prompted me to ask.

Thanks, Tom

Tom,

Most golfers tee the ball far too high. It should be teed so that the equator of the ball is even with the upper portion of the driver clubface when the club is soled behind the ball.

You will want to read the following forum post about using a flatter swing plane with the driver to avoid imparting a slice producing side-spin to the ball: http://www.voy.com/111513/3619.html
