Subject: Belly Button in the Centre???

Like the players from the previous two messages, I am having alot of trouble with the driver and three wood. David, your response to Tom T was, "Your belly button should remain in the center of your stance throughout the swing just like with every other club in your bag. The idea is to swing around your body as if your spine were attached to a pole in the ground." I have read this comment from you in several places, and I don't get it.

I assume that you advocate a body turn, resulting in the player ending with almost his/her entire weight on the front foot (like the animated .gif on your home page). How can this be accomplished without some forward, lateral "sway"? If I stand with my feet apart and my weight evenly distributed, and then simply transfer all of my weight to my left foot without turning, the belly button moves laterally at least six to eight inches. Add the body turn to this movement, and the belly button is now in a new area code from where it began.

Perhaps when you say the belly button should stay in the centre you mean along a vertical line drawn through the top of the head, chin, and belly button, and the sway you are warning against is a sway of the hips. Is that correct?

Thanks.

Kelly,

The idea of the belly button being in the center of the swing is a relative concept. I use it more as a reference to where the butt-end of the golf club should be pointing as opposed to the forward press concept when addressing the ball. In relation to the swing the main thrust is that your center should not move to the right on the backswing or to the left during the downswing and follow through. In other words there should be no lateral sway whatsoever in your golf swing if you want to maximize power.

Conventional instruction promulgates the shifting of weight from the right side to the left during the swing which has led most golfers to develop this power robbing sway. While there is no doubt that your weight is going to naturally shift during your swing, the conscious thought of shifting weight will cause you to develop a lateral movement. If you watch the swing of Tiger Woods or other big hitters you will notice that there is no lateral movement in their swing whatsoever and the result is a "snap the whip" effect through impact. It is this effect that results in an exponential increase in swing speed and greater distance.

The golf swing should be nothing more than a turning of the torso around a relatively stable base with no lateral movement. This will automatically create the "snap the whip" effect mentioned above.
