Kelly,

The idea of the belly button being in the center of the swing is a relative concept. I use it more as a reference to where the butt-end of the golf club should be pointing as opposed to the forward press concept when addressing the ball. In relation to the swing the main thrust is that your center should not move to the right on the backswing or to the left during the downswing and follow through. In other words there should be no lateral sway whatsoever in your golf swing if you want to maximize power.

Conventional instruction promulgates the shifting of weight from the right side to the left during the swing which has led most golfers to develop this power robbing sway. While there is no doubt that your weight is going to naturally shift during your swing, the conscious thought of shifting weight will cause you to develop a lateral movement. If you watch the swing of Tiger Woods or other big hitters you will notice that there is no lateral movement in their swing whatsoever and the result is a "snap the whip" effect through impact. It is this effect that results in an exponential increase in swing speed and greater distance.

The golf swing should be nothing more than a turning of the torso around a relatively stable base with no lateral movement. This will automatically create the "snap the whip" effect mentioned above.
