James,

The release of the wrists and hands through impact is a completely natural movement caused by centrifugal force and requires no conscious effort on the part of the golfer. In fact, trying to consciously perform this movement will hinder the release rather than improve it.

For whatever reason, golf is the only sport where the participant attempts to override the unconscious athletic/mechanical movements required. I am sure that this is a result of having golf instruction literally shoved down our throats at every turn. The fact is that if you leave your conscious mind out of the equation your body will learn through trial and error how to perform any required movement in the most efficient manner. You certainly do not consciously think about how to walk down the street, ride a bicycle, or throw a baseball. If you did try to inject conscious thought into these movements your coordination would suffer greatly.

My advice is to simply add more time at the range so that your body can learn to perform the entire swing movement at it's own pace. I have conducted experiments where I have had participants hit balls at the range. Instead of trying to correct ball flight patterns, the golfer is directed to only concentrate on solid ball contact. In every case, any undesirable ball flight pattern corrects itself. The reason is that although the golfer will be conscious of shots hit to the right or left and shots that slice or hook, they are not consciously trying to make corrections. This allows the unconscious mind to take over and make the slight modifications to the thousands of neuron connections involved that are necessary to correct what the conscious mind has deemed to be poor shot patterns. It is a fascinating process and one that works to perfection every time as long as the golfer just "gets out of the way".

David
