Trigger finger tendonitis is usually caused by repetitive direct pressure on the flexor tendon from grasping a tool or other object using an overly firm grip or by using an unorthodox gripping method. As a general rule, a cortisone injection will alleviate the problem. Recurrence can be prevented by simply gripping objects with less force or eliminating any unorthodox gripping procedures. If you continue with the particular activity that originally caused the problem and do not change your gripping method, the condition will probably return. Bear in mind that a maximum of three cortisone injections are allowed for this problem.

As a side note, an author named Mindy Blake wrote a book in 1972 entitled "The Golf Swing of the Future". In it he proposed a more athletic way to grip a golf club. The result was literally "tendonitis city" for the thumb.
